What are diamond cut alloys?

Diamond cut alloys are alloy wheels that feature a shiny, reflective surface that catches the eye. This finish is achieved by removing a thin layer from the wheel's surface using specialist lathing equipment, creating a precise and uniform finish that stands apart from other alloy wheel types.

Diamond cut alloys are more susceptible to damage from road debris and harsh weather conditions, which is why the diamond cutting process is a popular service for restoring their appearance.

Can my alloys be diamond cut?

Whether or not your alloys can be diamond cut will depend on their size, condition, and the number of times they have been previously cut. Diamond cut alloy wheels can only be re-cut a limited number of times, as removing too much alloy could weaken the structure and make it unstable.

Rolling Rims' team can assess your alloy wheels and advise whether diamond cutting is still an option or whether an alloy wheel powder coating refurbishment would suit your requirements better.

How many times can an alloy be diamond cut?

Diamond cut alloys can only be re-cut several times, so choosing a reputable alloy wheel repair service matters. Rolling Rims' diamond cut alloy repair service is carried out using specialist equipment and by experienced technicians, ensuring that your alloys are restored to their original finish with precision and accuracy.

The diamond cutting process is meticulous and time-consuming, but we take pride in delivering finishes that look sharp and hold up properly once the job is done.

Can diamond cut alloy wheels be repaired?

Yes. If your diamond cut alloy has been damaged or scuffed, it can often be repaired using specialist refurbishment services like those offered at Rolling Rims. Damage often occurs when the wheel comes into contact with a kerb or other road debris.

Our team uses specialist equipment and techniques to restore the finish of diamond cut alloy wheels, including removing scratches and dents, refinishing the surface, and applying a protective coating to help prevent future damage. We can also advise when powder coating is the better long-term option.

Can you remove corrosion from diamond cut alloys?

Corrosion is common on diamond cut alloys. It occurs when the lacquer is damaged, allowing water to get between the alloy and the lacquer, which creates the cloudy effect many owners notice around the face of the wheel.

Unfortunately, you cannot simply polish corrosion out of a diamond cut alloy. In most cases, the wheel needs to go back through the full diamond cutting process so the damaged material can be removed and the finish rebuilt properly.

Service Information

Alloy wheel diamond cutting involves removing a thin layer from the alloy using our specialist lathing equipment. Diamond cutting can be applied to the face and lip of the wheel and is best suited to alloys that originally had a diamond cut finish.

The process is more meticulous and time-intensive than powder coating, and a quick mobile touch-up will not achieve the same finish because the job requires a specialist alloy wheel lathe.

Diamond cut alloys can only be re-cut a limited number of times. If durability matters more than preserving the original machined finish, powder coating can sometimes be the better long-term option.

Step 1 - Remove

If you have brought your vehicle to us, we jack it up, place it on axle stands, and remove the wheels. Once they are inside the workshop, we remove the tyres and valves so the wheels are ready for stripping.

Step 2 - Strip

With the tyres and valves removed, we can prepare the wheels for refinishing. Each alloy is stripped using Rolling Rims' own chemical process, which removes old paint and grime, even from hard-to-reach areas.

Step 3 - Prep

After soaking, the wheels are moved to the steam-cleaning bay so all residue is removed. If the alloys are damaged, we sand them down, weld where needed, then media blast the surface before paint.

Step 4 - Paint

Once the alloys are prepped and cleaned, we move them into the powder coating bay. There we apply your chosen colour and cure it in the oven.

Step 5 - Cut

After painting, the alloys go onto our specialist lathe for the diamond cut finish. Once the cut is complete, we protect the surface with lacquer so the wheels are ready for the road ahead.

Step 6 - Assemble

Your alloys are then rebuilt with new valves and your tyres refitted. If your tyres are low on tread, this is a good time to replace them. We balance the wheels and make sure they are within spec before they go back on the vehicle. Note: TPMS stems will be reused if suitable. We will not refit tyres with excessive damage.
