How do I know if my alloy is buckled?

It can be difficult to tell if your alloy wheel is buckled just by looking at it. That is why it is important to pay attention to changes in how the vehicle feels on the road.

If you notice vibration, wobbling, pulling to one side, or difficulty steering while driving, your alloy wheel may be buckled or dented. If you suspect that is the case, it is worth having the wheel inspected to determine whether straightening is needed.

Why has my alloy buckled?

Alloy wheels can become buckled or dented for several reasons. The most common cause is hitting a pothole or kerb. That impact can deform the wheel, damage the tyre seal, and lead to further handling issues.

Speed bumps taken too quickly and collisions with road debris can also cause the wheel to bend. Even a relatively minor impact can be enough to create a noticeable buckle on modern low-profile wheel setups. If you are not sure whether the symptoms point to wheel damage, read our guide to spotting pothole damage.

Should I get the buckle fixed?

Yes. If you have a buckled or dented alloy wheel, getting it fixed as soon as possible is the safest approach. Driving with a damaged alloy can cause further damage to the wheel, tyre, and suspension, and it may compromise how the vehicle handles.

At Rolling Rims, we offer alloy wheel straightening repair services that can often restore the wheel to its original condition without forcing you into a replacement.

Service Information

During wheel straightening, the paint or lacquer may be damaged due to the wheel being moved back into the correct position. This is an unavoidable consequence of the repair. We always recommend a full refurbishment with a straightened wheel if you also want the finish restored afterwards.

FAQs

Answers to the questions customers usually ask before booking

Common signs include steering vibration, wobbling, poor ride quality, or visible bends in the wheel. If the car feels different after a pothole or kerb strike, it is worth having the wheel inspected.

Step 1 - Remove

If you have brought your vehicle to us, we jack it up, place it on axle stands, and remove the wheels. Once inside the workshop, the tyres and valves are removed so the wheel is ready for straightening.

Step 2 - Straighten

The wheel is mounted on our specialist straightener, heated, and carefully brought back into tolerance. If the wheel is also cracked, we can advise on welding and any additional work required.

Step 3 - Refurbishment (Optional)

If you want the finish restored as well, this is the stage where we complete the additional refurbishment work, such as powder coating or diamond cutting.

Step 4 - Assemble

Your alloys are then rebuilt with new valves and your tyres refitted. If your tyres are low on tread, this is a good time to replace them. We balance the wheels and make sure they are within spec before they go back on the vehicle. Note: TPMS stems will be reused if suitable. We will not refit tyres with excessive damage.
